Specimen privacy policy
Effective 6 October 2026. Publisher: MLHMTECH.
Specimen collects no personal data. It has no account, no analytics, no telemetry and no backend. It makes no network requests while it runs.
What Specimen does with your data
- Pages you inspect. Specimen runs on a page only after you click its toolbar icon or press its keyboard shortcut. It reads that page's font styles (font names, weights, sizes, colors) in your browser to show them to you. That information never leaves your browser.
- Stay on while I browse (optional, off by default). If you turn this on in Settings, your browser asks you to let Specimen read the sites you visit. Specimen then switches itself on again on each new page you open in a tab where you already turned it on, until you press Esc. It still only reads font styles in your browser, still sends nothing anywhere, and keeps no record of the pages you visit (apart from the site name saved with a font you pin, as described below). Switching the setting off gives the access back.
-
Your history and library. When you pin a font, Specimen saves the font's
name, weight, size, where it comes from and the site's domain name (for example
example.com) in your browser's local extension storage. If you star a font, it is saved to your library with an optional note you write. This stays on your device. You can turn history off in Settings. - Your settings. Theme, tooltip size, the history switch and the stay-on switch are stored the same way.
What Specimen does not do
- It does not send any information to MLHMTECH or to anyone else.
- It does not use cookies, fingerprinting or advertising identifiers.
- It does not read or store the text, images or form entries on the pages you inspect, beyond the short text sample shown in a tooltip while you hover (which is not saved).
- It does not download or extract font files.
- It does not sell, share or transfer data, because it has none to share.
Links you may click
Result cards include links to Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts and MyFonts. Specimen never visits them on its own. If you click one, your browser opens that site, which has its own privacy policy.
Controlling and deleting your data
Open the Specimen options page, then Settings, then Your data. You can clear your history, delete your library, or delete everything Specimen has stored. Uninstalling the extension removes all of it. You can also export your library and history as CSV, JSON or Markdown from the options page.
Chrome Web Store user data policy
Specimen does not sell or transfer user data to third parties, does not use or transfer user data for anything unrelated to its single purpose (identifying fonts on web pages), and does not use or transfer user data to judge creditworthiness or for lending. It has no user data to share in the first place.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at the same address with a new effective date.
